There is no love quite like the love between Mother and Child—they share joy, tenderness and respect. I have seen love shared between mother and child around the world and certainly in Aotearoa New Zealand. There is a beautiful gesture in the Maori culture called a Hongi. This is a traditional greeting of Aotearoa New Zealand's indigenous Maori people. The act involves touching one's nose and forehead to another person and then breathing together. The hongi roughly means "sharing of breath." Once a visitor, also referred to as a manuhiri, enacts the hongi with a local, a sense of responsibility is also imparted to that individual about their place in the delicate ecosystem of the island.
When I imagine the relationship between Mother Mary and Jesus I imagine if they were in Aotearoa New Zealand they would have shared the sacred act of the hongi. Love is certainly chosen, blessed and shared. This speaks grandly of God's Aroha (love) for us and what I imagine God desires for us all - to "share of breath" with all creation.
I hope this artwork reminds you that God is sharing our breath: Breathing tenderness and respect as our Mother Mary did with Jesus, on this day and every day.
